It’s a simple fact: Safety belts save lives. Most of those who die on Florida’s roadways are not buckled up.

With the busy Memorial Day weekend approaching, law enforcement agencies across Florida are launching the 8th annual Click It or Ticket crackdown on unbuckled drivers and passengers.

Click It or Ticket’s two-pronged approach – enforcement plus awareness – has made it the most successful safety belt campaign ever. Safety belt use in Florida has jumped 22% since the state first joined Click It or Ticket in 2001. Last year’s safety belt rate was 79.1%, up from 64.8% in 2000.

But Click It or Ticket’s work is not done. One in 5 Floridians still does not buckle up. Each year, that translates into unnecessary fatalities. In Florida in 2006, more than 1,300 people died unbuckled in vehicles equipped with safety belts.

Click It or Ticket is a cooperative effort of The Florida Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and law enforcement agencies across the state.
