Seven years of Click It or Ticket campaigns has saved scores of lives in Florida. Since the first state campaign in 2001, safety belt use has jumped 22%.

Yet 1 of every 5 Floridians still does not wear a safety belt, placing Florida in the bottom third of states nationwide and far behind Western states, where 93% of drivers and passengers buckle up.

Last year, Florida’s safety belt use was 79.1%, a slight drop of 0.8% from the previous year and below the national rate of 82%.

The 2008 Click It or Ticket campaign aims to reverse that trend and boost overall belt use in Florida. This year’s campaign also will work to encourage more men to wear safety belts. Last year in Florida, men buckled up 75.1% of the time, compared with 83.8% for women.

For drivers and passengers of all ages, buckling up is the single most effective way to reduce the risk of injury or death in motor vehicle crashes.
